Advanced Spanish Medical Interpreter Program (25 hours)
This course gives the tools to develop, sharpen and master the art and skills of medical interpreting; the importance of working as a team player with the health care staff, and an understanding of the role, responsibilities and boundaries of the interpreter. The training presents the interpreter’s role as linguistic and cultural mediator in multidisciplinary settings and provides topics such as code of ethics, cultural aspects of Latino/Hispanic healthcare, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, medical procedures and the role of various medical providers.
Who should take this training?
Spanish interpreters who want to enrich their vocabulary, medical terminology and/or improve note taking and memory skills.
Spanish interpreters who want to prepare for either of the two national certification exams (IMIA or CCHI)
Time: 3 Saturdays (8:30 am - 5:00p.m)
Dates: Winter 2011 December 3, 10, and January 15.
Spring 2012 April 28, May 12, 19.
Summer 2012 August 25, September 8, 15.
Tuition: $325.00 (discount may be offered by some agencies and hospitals)
$130.00 per session (+ material)
Material will be provided (Medical terminology for interpreters book, cultural communication guide, Anatomy charts and Practice exercises)
Prerequisites:
40 hours training as an interpreter.
1 year minimum experience as an interpreter
High school diploma or GED (or equivalent)
